Here at JFK we have very complex and crowded airspace structures.

LGA is barely 9 miles to the north and EWR is about 15 miles west. Even TEB to the northwest impacts traffic flow into the three main airports. This leads to some complex departure procedures, especially departing the 31's or 4's. While noise abatement is of course a consideration, the primary purpose of those departure procedures is to separate aircraft from LGA traffic.
